Waipahu is located 11 miles northwest of Honolulu. Waipahu has a population of over 38,000 and was a sugar plantation before it was developed into the town it is today. Situated on the north shore of both Middle Loch and West Loch of Pearl Harbor, Waipahu was considered to be the capital of Oahu by Hawaiians before it was settled by Westerners. The name Waipahu is a combination of two words that when put together mean artesian spring. In its history the site was popular among Hawaiians who gathered to enjoy the fresh spring water.
Waipahu is rich with history and home to the Hawaii Plantation Village, an outdoor museum reminiscent of a Hawaiian plantation and demonstrates how the workers lived. The village has original structures as well as replicas and is a spot where visitors and locals converge to learn more about the area’s past.
Golf is also available in Waipahu. The Royal Kunia Country Club offers a Robin Nelson designed golf course which is often described as the most scenic course on Oahu, with outstanding views of the city and the beaches. Playing here is considered reasonable in price and the course itself is very well maintained. The Waikele Golf Club is close to the outlet shops and as a result can come as a surprise to golfers who are not expecting to find such an outstanding course. In fact, many reviews of the course are written by people who have dropped wives and friends off to shop while they play a round of golf with a friend. The course is well-maintained and attractively landscaped.
While there are many opportunities for visitors in Waipahu, families are drawn to Waipahu for the educational options that exist in the area. The top ranked schools in Waipahu include Kanoelani Elementary School, Hawaii Technology Academy, Kaleiopuu Elementary School, Waikele Elementary School and August Ahrens Elementary School. In total, there are 15 preschools, 10 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and 2 high schools in Waipahu.
Waipahu is the fifth largest community on Oahu and is considered a medium sized coastal town with an ethnically diverse population. The wonderful bays and inlets along with the large number of activities and historical significance of the area are a driver of Waipahu real estate.
